[JUS 494] Politics of Technology + Ice Cream

4 September 2008 12 views 11 Comments

Last Tuesday we talked about the politics of technology in my JUS 494 class. Just like my JUS 394 class last semester, I began this class, too, with endorsing the idea that technology is political — the politics are built into the design of the artifact. How? You can listen to my lecture, but ah, perhaps that’s really too much to do, it’s a long lecture. Just enjoy the slideshow then. Though without my lecture, the slideshow is barely understandable.

Meanwhile, I am supposed to prepare myself for tomorrow’s class and to write some articles whose due dates are near, but I got too tired. For some unknown reasons, I’ve been feverish in the last … I don’t know how many days. I am fine and not fine. Anyway, I’ll be fine. At least messing around with the (electric) piano helped. So, instead of listening to my lecture, perhaps you’re better off listening to my piano rendition of Es Lilin…. perhaps worse off, hehe. This is a very simple Sundanese song about a candle ice…. ice cream, I just messed it up into this piece…. beware, it came from someone whose body temperature was much above normal… and well… but this is not the first time she is in an abnormal state :p

SUNDANESE ICE CREAM SONG in A Minor*

* I originally composed and played this song for the first time during my visit to Tokyo, in Chiba (Makuhari) at the house of Mertani-Akhtar family using their electric piano. So, this song is re-played and dedicated for them — Dian, Saeed, Raisa, and Ken — as well as Willy and Hoho…. with love (I miss you all). They wrote stories about my visit, here and here.

Interesting slide show how objects and inventions are political. Seems life by its very nature is political because ideas and biases will be expressed inherently by the designer.
nice song as well, kind of relaxing..what are the politics of that song?
